Native advertising
sponsored contentNative advertising is paid content that blends into the form and style of its platform: an article on a news site, a recommendation in a social feed or a promoted result in search. The ad is labelled commercial, but it is consumed like content.
Good to know
Native’s power lies in attention quality: a content-shaped ad gets read where a banner gets skipped. In media partnerships the brand also borrows the publisher’s credibility, which makes native effective for demanding messages that will not fit a banner.
The price is correspondingly higher: a native article in Finnish media typically costs 3,000–15,000 € including production. The investment pays when the content genuinely serves the reader and leads to a considered next step, not straight to the checkout.
IN PRACTICE
The three forms of native
A media native article
A commercial article in editorial clothing in a news medium. The most credible and most expensive form.
Feed-native ads
Ads blending into the feed on Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn. In practice the base form of all social advertising.
Recommendation widgets
Content teasers under articles through networks. Cheap volume, wildly varying quality.
PITFALLS
Two ways to fail at native
The ad is disguised as journalism
Hidden commercial intent erodes both the medium’s and the brand’s credibility and breaks consumer protection rules. A clear label does not weaken performance.
The content is a brochure in article clothes
Product praise does not get read to the end. Native works when it solves the reader’s problem and the brand stays the helper, not the protagonist.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
What does native advertising cost in Finland?+
A media native article typically costs 3,000–15,000 € with production, depending on the publisher and distribution. Feed-native social ads are priced like normal ads.
How does native differ from content marketing?+
Content marketing is published in your own channels; native is bought in front of another medium’s audience. The same content can live in both.
Must native ads be labelled?+
Yes: commercial collaboration must be clearly marked under both law and platform rules. The label protects the brand too.
How are native results measured?+
Read time, completion and follow-up actions tell more than clicks. In media partnerships, metrics and reporting are agreed up front.
When is native the right choice?+
When the message needs room and reasoning: a new category, a complex service or an image shift. A simple offer works in cheaper formats.
