Pixel
tracking pixelA pixel is an ad platform’s tracking code installed on a website to link ad views and clicks to actions on the site. Through it the platform knows who bought, and learns to find more people like them.
Good to know
The pixel is the nervous system of performance advertising: without it the platform sees no conversions, cannot optimise and cannot build remarketing audiences. The same data powers results reporting and lookalikes, making pixel installation the first technical step of advertising.
Because of browser restrictions and cookie loss, a browser pixel alone now sees only part of the events. Server-side tracking (such as Meta’s Conversions API) is installed alongside, sending events straight from the server and patching the browser’s gaps. Set both up at the same time: retrofitting server-side tracking later means re-testing every event.
IN PRACTICE
What the pixel is used for
Measuring conversions
Sales, leads and bookings register on the ad platform, and campaigns can be judged on results instead of clicks.
Fuel for optimisation
The algorithm hunts for more of those who convert. Without event data it only optimises clicks.
Building audiences
Site visitors, buyers and cart abandoners become remarketing and lookalike audiences.
PITFALLS
Two pixel mistakes
A pixel without events
Tracking page loads alone says nothing about sales. Define the events: purchase, lead, add to cart, with values.
Events firing wrong
A missing thank-you page or a double load distorts everything built on the data. Test events with a tool before campaigns.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a pixel for every platform?+
Yes: Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and Google each use their own. Installation is centralised with Tag Manager without constant code work.
Is the pixel legal under GDPR?+
Yes, when consent is asked before tracking starts and the use is described in your privacy notice. A consent platform ties the pixels to the permission.
What is the Conversions API?+
Server-side event delivery straight to the platform, bypassing the browser. It complements the pixel and recovers part of the data blockers eat.
How do I verify the pixel works?+
The platforms’ test tools and browser extensions show events firing in real time. Verification belongs to every campaign start.
What happens without a pixel?+
Advertising flies blind: no results data, no optimisation, no remarketing. In practice you pay full price for half a tool.
