Target audience
target groupThe target audience is the group of people marketing is aimed at: those whose problem the product solves and who are able to buy it. The definition steers everything else: channel choices, messages and budget split.
Good to know
A usable audience is defined tightly enough to be recognisable in ad platform settings and content topics: "Espoo terraced-house owners whose roof is nearing renovation age" steers the work, "homeowners aged 25–65" limits nothing. Narrowing feels like shrinking the market, but in practice it multiplies the hit rate.
A target audience is not the same as a buyer persona: the audience is a measurable group, the persona its typified representative. The group is defined with data; the persona helps you address it. In B2B the audience often spans several roles from decision-maker to user, each needing its own message.
IN PRACTICE
How to define the audience
Start from current customers
Who buys the most, stays longest and refers others? The best audience looks like your best current customers.
Limit to the recognisable
Define the group with attributes found in channel targeting: location, life stage, role, interest.
Test and refine
Run the same message to two group variants and let the data choose. The audience is a hypothesis results keep correcting.
PITFALLS
Two audience mistakes
Selling to everyone
"Our audience is everyone in Finland" means the message bites no one. Narrowing does not close doors, it opens the right ones.
Defined once, then forgotten
The market, product and buyers change. The audience is rechecked yearly against realised customer data.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
How many audiences can a company have?+
A few prioritised ones suffice: one primary and 1–3 secondary. Ten groups means in practice that none is served well.
How is the audience taken to an ad platform?+
Translate the definition into the platform’s language: locations, ages, interests, behaviours. Your own customer data and site visitors are the sharpest seed audiences.
What is the difference between an audience and a segment?+
Segmentation splits the whole market into parts; the target audience is the choice of which parts to pursue. First divide, then choose.
How does a B2B audience differ from consumers?+
Several roles join the decision and the cycle is long. The audience is defined at company level (industry, size) and role level (decision-maker, user) separately.
How do I know the audience is right?+
Ad accuracy improves: click prices fall, conversion rises and sales hears fewer "not for us" replies.
