UTM parameters
campaign tagsUTM parameters are tags appended to a URL that let analytics identify which campaign, channel and content a visitor came from. Without them, traffic from a newsletter or a social post blends into direct and other traffic.
Good to know
Five parameters cover the need: source (which service), medium (which means), campaign (which campaign), plus content and term for detail. GA4 reads them automatically and groups traffic by them, so report quality is directly tagging quality.
The biggest threat is inconsistency: "Newsletter", "newsletter" and "email" are three different sources to analytics. An agreed lowercase convention and a shared link sheet keep the data whole. Google’s own campaigns are auto-tagged; UTMs are needed everywhere else, from newsletters to partner links and printed QR codes.
IN PRACTICE
UTM tagging in practice
When to add UTMs
To every link you distribute: newsletters, social posts, partner links, QR codes. Never to links within your own site.
The naming convention
Lowercase, no spaces, agreed values: source=instagram, medium=social, campaign=spring2026. One sheet everyone uses.
Reading the reports
GA4’s acquisition reports group traffic by the parameters. A campaign’s return opens up by its campaign name.
PITFALLS
Two UTM mistakes
Internal links get tagged
A UTM on your own site cuts the session and erases the original source. Parameters belong only on links coming from outside.
Everyone tags their own way
Mixed values splinter one campaign into ten rows. Without a shared convention the data exists but is unusable.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
Which UTM parameters are required?+
Source and medium are the minimum, campaign in practice always included. Content separates versions of one campaign and term the keywords.
Do users see UTM parameters?+
Yes, in the address bar. It does no harm, but long links can be tidied with a shortener for print and QR codes.
Do UTMs affect search rankings?+
Not when used correctly. If tagged URLs reach the index, the canonical URL tells Google the original page.
Are UTMs needed for Google and Meta ads?+
Google Ads auto-tags through the GA4 link. On Meta, add UTMs at ad level so the traffic separates from organic.
How is QR code traffic measured?+
Put a UTM-tagged URL behind the code, for example source=flyer, medium=qr. Print and outdoor advertising traffic becomes measurable that way, campaign by campaign.
