AI search (GEO)
generative engine optimizationAI search means search experiences where a language model composes the answer and cites its sources: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. Pursuing visibility in them is called GEO, generative engine optimization.
Good to know
AI search shifts the distribution: some answers are read from the summary without a click, so traffic drops while appearing as a source builds trust. For commercial and local queries the clicks still flow to websites, so the loss hits general information queries hardest.
The sources picked are largely the same content that wins classic search: clearly structured, answering questions directly, credible in authorship. Definitions right under the heading, structured data and strong E-E-A-T raise the odds of being cited.
IN PRACTICE
How content gets into AI answers
Answer questions directly
Language models extract tight, self-contained answers. The definition in the first sentence and a concrete example right after.
Build for machine reading
A clear heading hierarchy, lists, tables and schema markup help the model understand and cite correctly.
Be a credible source
A named author, a date, sources and consistent topical coverage. Models favour sources that others also cite.
PITFALLS
Two ways to react wrong
AI bots get blocked as a reflex
Blocking removes your content from AI answers, but the questions still get answered, with a competitor’s content. The blocking decision is strategic, not technical.
GEO tricks without an SEO base
Content that does not rank in search does not become a summary source either. The foundation comes first.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO still worth it in the AI search era?+
Yes: the sources of AI answers are mostly the same pages that rank in classic search. Good SEO is a precondition of GEO.
How do I see if AI cites my content?+
Ask the tools questions in your field and check the source lists. In analytics, AI traffic shows as referrals from ChatGPT and Perplexity, for example.
What does GEO require beyond SEO?+
No new bag of tricks, a shift of emphasis: more direct answers, stronger sourcing and question-form headings. The foundation is the same.
Will my traffic decline?+
Informational traffic likely will, purchase-intent traffic less. That is why a content strategy should weight queries where the click is necessary for the searcher.
