Featured snippet
position zeroA featured snippet is a direct answer Google lifts to the top of the results page, extracted from a page’s content. It shows above the regular results, which is why it is also called position zero.
Good to know
The snippet typically goes to a page that already ranks in the top ten and answers the question tightly right after a subheading: a 40–60 word paragraph, a numbered list or a table. The format follows whatever Google currently shows for that query.
The same tight answer format that wins the snippet also gets picked as a source for AI search. Some snippets reduce clicks because the answer is read on the results page, but appearing as the answer’s source builds brand trust even then.
IN PRACTICE
How to chase the snippet
Answer right under the heading
A question-form subheading with a tight answer directly beneath it. Background comes after the answer, not before.
Use the right format
Definition queries want a paragraph, step-by-step instructions a numbered list, comparisons a table. Model your answer on the current snippet.
Rank top ten first
Google picks the snippet almost always from first-page results. Without a base ranking, formatting will not help.
PITFALLS
Two ways to chase the snippet wrong
Formatting without a base ranking
Snippet formatting on a page outside the top ten is wasted work. Ranking first, format second.
The whole answer is given away
If the snippet says everything, no reason to click remains. Answer the question and hold depth that requires the visit.

Frequently asked questions
How can I win a featured snippet?+
Rank in the top ten first, then phrase your answer more clearly than the current snippet: tighter, more direct, better structured.
Is the snippet always worth chasing?+
Usually yes: it brings visibility and authority. The exception is queries where the whole answer fits in the snippet and no reason to click remains.
Why did I lose the snippet?+
A competitor phrased a better answer or Google changed the snippet format. Check what is shown now and update your answer into that shape.
Does the snippet show in AI search?+
The same content often serves both: AI summaries favour the same tight, sourced answers snippets do.
Can I opt out of the snippet?+
Yes, with a nosnippet directive, but it removes your regular description text too. In practice opting out rarely pays.
