Backlink
inbound linkA backlink is a link from another website to yours. Google reads links as recommendations: the more trusted the sites linking to you, the more credible Google considers your site.
Good to know
A link’s value depends on its source: one link from a respected news site or industry body outweighs a hundred directory links. Topical connection matters too, because a link to a marketing site from a construction blog is an odd signal to Google.
Bought links violate Google’s policies and can collapse your visibility. A durable link profile grows from content worth citing: research, tools and expert commentary in the media. That is earned media at its purest. In the small Finnish market a handful of mentions in trade media can move rankings noticeably, because competitors’ profiles are thin too.
IN PRACTICE
How links are earned
Publish things worth citing
Original data, comparisons and calculators collect links naturally, because other writers need sources.
Be a source for the media
Expert commentary and releases produce mentions in the news. Trade media link most readily.
Use existing relationships
Partners, associations, events and schools link gladly when the content gives a reason. Asking is free.
PITFALLS
Two ways to ruin a link profile
A link package from a web store
Hundred-link bundles come from junk sites Google recognises. At best they do nothing, at worst they collapse your visibility.
Volume overtakes quality
A hundred directory links do not match one trade media mention. Hunting links from the wrong end burns time and reputation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
How many backlinks do I need?+
Quality decides, not volume: a handful of topical links from trusted sites beats hundreds of directory entries. Competitive fields need more.
Are bought links a risk?+
Yes. Buying links against Google’s policies can collapse visibility, and the clean-up costs more than doing it properly would have.
Where do I see my site’s links?+
Google Search Console lists linking sites for free. Paid tools such as Ahrefs also show competitors’ links.
Does the anchor text of a link matter?+
Yes: a descriptive anchor tells Google the target page’s topic. In a natural profile the anchors vary rather than repeating one keyword.
Should bad links be disavowed?+
Rarely: Google mostly ignores junk links on its own these days. Disavow matters mainly when the profile carries large-scale bought linking.
