Engagement
engagement rateEngagement means all the actions people take on content: likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks. Engagement rate is calculated by dividing the number of actions by reach or impressions.
Good to know
Social algorithms reward engagement because it predicts the content will interest others too. Saves and shares weigh more than likes: they say the content was useful or resonant enough to return to. Engagement is still an intermediate metric whose value is ultimately measured in conversions.
Engagement is an easy vanity metric when measured apart from goals. A funny video can collect thousands of reactions without bringing a single customer, and a matter-of-fact service walkthrough can drive sales on modest like counts.
FORMULA
How engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate is the sum of engagements divided by reach. Some use impressions as the denominator; pick one convention.
Engagement rate = engagements ÷ reach × 100
In organic social, 3–6 % of reach is a good level; the best short-form videos climb past 10 %.
EXAMPLE
The video engaged well. The next question is how many moved on to the profile or the site.
PITFALLS
Two ways to misread engagement
Giveaways distort the audience
A raffle collects engagers who want the prize, not the service. The algorithm learns the wrong audience and serves your next posts to them.
Reactions get counted, clicks do not
A like costs the viewer nothing; moving to your site costs effort. Profile visits and clicks predict sales better.
The trend is read one post at a time
A single post’s success is a lottery the algorithm stirs. Judge engagement as a monthly average, not post by post.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate?+
Calculated from reach, 3–6 % is good and over 10 % excellent. Small accounts naturally see higher percentages than large ones.
Which engagements are most valuable?+
Shares and saves, because they spread the content and predict return visits. Comments signal community; a like is the lightest signal.
Can engagement be bought?+
Boosting buys visibility, not genuine interest. Bought engagement distorts your metrics and teaches the algorithm the wrong audience.
Why does reach grow while engagement falls?+
The content spreads to people it fits less well than your core followers. A falling percentage with growing distribution is normal; falling absolute numbers are not.
