Impression
ad viewAn impression is counted every time an ad or a post loads into view on a screen. It is advertising’s base unit, used to price and report visibility. The same person can produce many impressions.
Good to know
An impression does not guarantee attention: it logs even if the ad flashes past in a fraction of a second. That is why viewability, whether the ad was genuinely on screen long enough, and engagement, which proves attention, are tracked alongside.
The difference between impressions and reach is repetition: 100,000 impressions can mean 100,000 people once or 20,000 people five times. The campaign’s purpose decides which you want, and the ratio, frequency, reveals which is actually happening.
IN PRACTICE
Impressions in their roles
The unit of pricing
Most advertising is priced per thousand impressions (CPM). Impressions are thus the direct basis of cost tracking.
A delivery health check
Collapsing impressions signal a budget, bid or audience problem before any other metric reacts.
A crude measure of awareness
Repeated views build memory. Without viewability and reach, though, the number is only raw material.
PITFALLS
Two ways to misread impressions
Impressions reported as results
A million views sounds good but says nothing about attention or sales. An impression is an input, not an outcome.
Platform numbers added together
Every platform counts views its own way, and the same person appears on several. The sum overstates visibility heavily.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
Does an impression count even if nobody looks?+
Yes: it logs on load. A viewable impression requires, as the common standard, at least 50 % of the ad on screen for one second.
What is the difference between impressions and reach?+
Impressions count displays, reach counts distinct people. Impressions divided by reach gives frequency, the average repetition.
How many impressions does a result take?+
A memory trace typically needs several encounters over weeks. A single view rarely suffices, which is why continuity beats bursts.
Why did organic impressions fall?+
Algorithms shift constantly, and organic distribution trends down on every platform. Compare the trend to your own history, not a single week.
Are bots included in impressions?+
Partly: non-human traffic exists in networks. The big platforms’ own counts are fairly clean; in open web buying, verification pays.
