GTM

Google Tag Manager

GTM, Google Tag Manager, is a free tool for managing a site’s measurement and advertising code from one place without constant development work. One container is installed once, and after that tags are added, edited and tested in GTM’s interface.

Good to know

GTM’s value is speed and control: a new pixel or event live in minutes without a developer queue, version history preserved and a preview mode for testing before publishing. Without GTM, every measurement change is a code change waiting in someone’s backlog.

GTM also centralises consent: consent mode ties all tags to the cookie choice with one rule. Clean old tags from the container yearly, because forgotten scripts slow the page and collect data for nothing. Name tags consistently from day one so the container stays readable for whoever inherits it.

IN PRACTICE

GTM’s core concepts

Tag

Executable code: a GA4 event, a Meta pixel or another script. The what to fire.

Trigger

The condition that fires the tag: a page load, a click, a form submission. The when to fire.

Variable

The information passed along: page URL, order value, button text. The what to tell.

PITFALLS

Two GTM mistakes

Publishing without preview

A broken trigger can double conversions or switch measurement off entirely. Preview and a test order belong to every release.

The container grows unmanaged

Years of tag build-up slows the site and nobody remembers what does what. A naming convention and a yearly clean-up keep the container in hand.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GTM and GA4?+

GA4 collects and reports the data; GTM manages the code that sends it. GTM is the plumbing, GA4 one of its endpoints.

Do I need GTM if I only have GA4?+

You still benefit: events can be defined without code, and when a Meta pixel or another tag becomes relevant, the base is ready.

Can GTM break my site?+

A badly made tag can slow the page or cause errors. Preview mode and version rollback make mistakes easy to undo.

Who usually manages GTM?+

Marketing or a partner, not developers: that is the whole point of the tool. Still restrict permissions and grant publish rights sparingly.

What is server-side GTM?+

Your own container on a server, sending events to platforms past the browser. It improves data coverage and control over what leaves your site, at the cost of a more technical setup and modest hosting fees.
