Programmatic advertising

automated media buying

Programmatic advertising means buying digital ad space automatically, most often in a real-time auction. As a page loads, systems auction the impression in milliseconds, and the winner’s ad is shown to that specific viewer.

Good to know

The core benefit is buying audiences instead of placements: the same budget targets people who match your criteria regardless of which site they are on. Premium space in major media is bought through the same pipes as direct deals without the open auction.

As cookies fade, targeting leans increasingly on first-party data and content context: ads show on topically relevant pages without personal tracking. Programmatic now covers video, audio, digital out-of-home and streaming TV alongside display.

IN PRACTICE

The forms of programmatic buying

Open auction

The market open to all in real time. Biggest volume and lowest price, demands strict placement and fraud control.

Direct deals

Agreed price and inventory with a chosen medium, executed programmatically. Premium environments without manual work.

New channels

Digital out-of-home, audio and streaming TV bought from the same systems. One dataset, many screens.

PITFALLS

Two ways to waste a programmatic budget

The chain’s fees go uncounted

Technology and intermediary fees can eat tens of percent of each media euro. Ask for a breakdown of where the money really goes.

Cheap inventory is bought blind

The lowest CPM often comes from sites nobody reads. Placement reports and block lists belong to the weekly routine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

How does programmatic differ from Google Ads?+

Google Ads is one closed programmatic environment. Independent buying platforms (DSPs) open access to wider inventory and premium media.

At what budget does programmatic pay?+

Independent DSPs effectively require at least a few thousand euros of monthly budget. Below that, Google’s and Meta’s own systems do the same job.

What is ad fraud?+

Bots and fake sites producing impressions without human viewers. Verification technology and trusted-seller lists reduce the risk.

How does cookie deprecation affect it?+

Third-party audience data weakens; first-party data, contextual targeting and publishers’ logged-in audiences take its place.

Who manages programmatic buying?+

A media agency, an independent partner or your own team on a licensed platform. Transparency decides: can you see what you pay for and where the ads run.
