PPC

pay per click

PPC (pay per click) means advertising where you pay only for realised clicks, not for visibility. The best-known PPC channel is Google search advertising, but the same model runs on Bing, many marketplace platforms and partly in social channels.

Good to know

PPC’s appeal is bounded risk: if nobody clicks, nothing is spent, and every euro ties to a measurable event. The true cost still settles after the click, because even cheap clicks are expensive when the landing page does not turn them into sales.

Click prices form in an auction where your quality counts as much as competitors’ bids. That makes PPC account care continuous work: cleaning search terms, testing ads and adjusting bids as the data comes in.

IN PRACTICE

The routines of PPC account care

Weekly: search terms and prices

Which real searches triggered the ads? Irrelevant ones become negatives, expensive unproductive ones go under review.

Monthly: ad testing

Two versions head to head, the loser rotated out. Continuous testing keeps quality scores up and click prices down.

Quarterly: structure and strategy

Campaign structure, bidding strategies and budget split reviewed against accumulated conversion data.

PITFALLS

Two ways to waste a PPC budget

The account is left to run itself

Without weekly care, search terms sprawl and prices creep up. PPC rewards continuous tending, not installation.

Clicks are bought without a path

The ad promises one thing, the page offers another, and the visitor leaves. The ad and the page are designed as a pair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PPC and SEM?+

PPC is a payment model, SEM the whole of search marketing. In practice the terms are often used interchangeably about search ads.

What is a good starter PPC budget?+

Enough to produce data for decisions: in Finland typically at least 500–1,000 €/month of media. Too small a budget yields no learnings to optimise with.

Does PPC work in a small niche?+

Often excellently: narrow demand means cheap clicks and few competitors. Low volume demands patience in collecting data.

When does PPC not pay?+

When conversion value is small against the click price with no repeat business, or when nobody searches for the solution yet. Then demand is created elsewhere first.

Can I run PPC myself?+

On a small budget yes, if you reserve a weekly care slot and learn negative keywords. In a competitive auction, experience shows directly in the prices.
