Brand

the image of a company

A brand is the whole of images, feelings and expectations people form about a company. It is not a logo but a reputation: what is thought of you when you are not in the room, and what a buyer expects before the first encounter.

Good to know

A brand is a financial asset: a known and trusted mark sells the same product at a higher price, with cheaper acquisition and less selling effort. A strong brand measurably lowers advertising costs, because a familiar sender gets clicked and remembered more often.

A brand is built from consistency: positioning defines what is promised, tone of voice and visual identity how it is said, and every encounter either delivers on the promise or eats it. For a small company the brand is not a logo project but the customer getting what they expected every time, and a little more.

IN PRACTICE

What a brand is built from

Promise and position

What you promise, to whom and why you: positioning separates you from competitors and steers all communication.

Recognisability

Name, look, voice and repeating elements you are recognised by without the logo. Consistency builds the memory trace.

Delivery at every encounter

The product, service and customer experience prove the promise. A brand is ultimately the sum of deeds.

PITFALLS

Two brand mistakes

The brand is mistaken for a logo

A new look does not fix poor service or an unclear position. The identity is the brand’s clothing, not its character.

The look and message vary by channel

A company that looks and sounds different everywhere accumulates a memory trace nowhere. Consistency is the brand’s compound interest.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

Why invest in a brand?+

It produces pricing power, cheaper acquisition and better recruitment. A known brand sells even when the ads are not running.

How does a small company build a brand?+

By choosing a clear position, keeping the look and voice consistent, and delivering the promise at every encounter. It takes discipline, not a big budget.

How is brand value measured?+

Practical metrics are branded search volume, direct traffic, unaided awareness in surveys and the price premium against competitors.

How long does brand building take?+

A memory trace forms in months, a reputation in years. That is why brand work is continuous doing, not a campaign.

What is the difference between brand and reputation?+

The brand is what you want the image to be and what you manage; the reputation is what the image actually is. The goal is to make them converge.
