Bounce rate

unengaged sessions

Bounce rate tells you what share of sessions ended without engagement: the visitor did not stay, convert or open a second page. In GA4 the number is the mirror image of engaged sessions.

Good to know

A high bounce rate is not automatically a problem: a visitor who found your opening hours and left got what they came for. It is alarming when paid traffic bounces immediately, because then the ad promise and the landing page do not match. GA4 counts a session as engaged if it lasts over 10 seconds, includes a conversion or has at least two page views.

A slow page shows up as bounces before it shows anywhere else: many leave during the load. Before content changes, check the Core Web Vitals, because a technical fix is often the fastest way to cut bounces.

FORMULA

How bounce rate is calculated

In GA4, bounce rate is the share of unengaged sessions out of all sessions.

Bounce rate = 100 % − engaged session share

The old Universal Analytics counted bounces from single-page sessions, so old benchmarks are not comparable.

EXAMPLE

Sessions3,000 Engaged sessions1,950 Bounce rate100 − 65 = 35 %

A good third of sessions ended without engagement. Fine for a blog page, highish for a campaign page.

PITFALLS

Two ways to misread bounce rate

Every page is held to the same bar

A contact page does its job in seconds, a campaign page does not. Set targets per page type, not for the site on average.

The number is watched without the traffic source

A new social campaign can raise bounces although the page did not change. Split organic, paid and direct traffic before interpreting.

The metric itself can be broken

A double-loading tag or an interstitial redirect distorts bounce numbers completely. Verify the tracking before drawing content conclusions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is a good bounce rate?+

On content pages 40–70 % is common; campaign and product pages aim below 40 %. Interpretation depends on the page’s job.

Why does GA4 show a different number than old Analytics?+

The calculation changed: GA4 measures engagement through time and events, Universal Analytics only page loads. The numbers are not comparable.

How do I reduce bounces?+

Deliver the ad’s promise in the headline immediately, speed up page load and lift the key content and next step above the fold.

Does bounce rate affect search rankings?+

Google does not use the GA4 number directly, but a searcher quickly returning to the results tells Google the page did not answer the query. The same root cause hurts both.
