Copywriting
persuasive writingCopywriting means writing commercial text whose job is to make the reader act: click, subscribe, buy. It differs from other writing in its goal: success is measured in results, not style.
Good to know
Good copy starts from the reader, not the product: it names the problem in the reader’s words, promises a concrete benefit and proves its claims. Customers’ own phrases from reviews and sales calls are copy’s best raw material, because they sound true by being true.
Clarity beats cleverness: readers skim, so the headline carries half the work and every sentence must earn the next one being read. Copy is also a testable craft: headline variants often differ by tens of percent, and an A/B test settles what opinion cannot.
IN PRACTICE
The base formulas of sales copy
Problem, agitation, solution
The PAS formula: name the problem, show its cost, offer the solution. It works because pain motivates before benefit.
Benefit first, feature after
The reader buys the outcome: "save five hours a week" beats "automated reporting".
Prove every claim
Numbers, customer stories and guarantees turn a promise credible. A claim without proof is ad noise.
PITFALLS
Two copy mistakes
The text talks about the company
"We are the leading..." interests nobody. Count the we-words and turn the sentences into reader benefits.
Cleverness blurs the message
A pun that needs explaining costs sales. A clear promise beats a smart but unclear one.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between copywriting and content production?+
Copy aims at action now, content builds trust over time. The same writer often does both, but the goal and metrics differ.
How is good copy recognised?+
By results: click rate, conversion and reply counts. Good copy also feels easy to read, which is where the effort went.
Can AI write copy?+
Drafts and variations yes, the sharp edge rarely: customer insight and a distinctive angle come from a human. The machine multiplies, the human chooses and sharpens.
How long should sales copy be?+
As long as the decision requires: an expensive or complex purchase needs reasoning, a familiar cheap one does not. Length is not the problem, empty sentences are.
What is copy’s most important element?+
The headline: it decides whether the rest gets read. Spend a disproportionate share of your time on it and test the alternatives.
