CTA

call to action

A CTA, call to action, is the element that asks for the next step: Book a time, Download the guide, Add to cart. It is the seam between content and conversion: without a prompt, even an interested visitor stays a reader.

Good to know

A working prompt says what happens and what you get: "Book a free assessment" beats "Submit" because it promises value and removes uncertainty. Friction-removers next to the button, such as "no commitment" or "we reply the same day", often lift conversion more than the button’s design.

The prompt is sized to the content’s warmth: a light step for a cold reader (download, subscribe, watch), a direct one for a hot one (book, request a quote). One primary prompt per view is enough, because two equal options paralyse the choice.

IN PRACTICE

The ingredients of a working CTA

A verb and a value

Start with the action and state the benefit: "Calculate your budget", "Book a 30 min sparring call". A generic "Read more" wastes the moment.

Visibility and repetition

The prompt stands out and repeats on a long page: top, middle and end. Scrolling must not lose the path.

Friction removal

Price, duration and no-commitment visible next to the prompt. Uncertainty is the biggest reason not to click.

PITFALLS

Two CTA mistakes

Several equal prompts

When everything is asked at once, nothing gets chosen. One primary prompt, the rest visually subordinate.

The prompt asks too much too early

"Request a quote" on first contact is a proposal on a first date. Offer the cold audience a lighter step.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is good CTA copy?+

A concrete verb and the value received: "Book a free assessment", "Download the calculator". Test 2–3 phrasings; word choice differences are often measurable.

How many CTAs may a page have?+

One primary goal per view; the same prompt may repeat. A secondary option is styled lighter, such as a text link.

Does button colour affect conversion?+

Contrast does, the shade rarely: the button must stand out and look clickable. Copy and placement weigh more than colour.

Where should the CTA go?+

The first one in the opening view, then at natural breaks and at the end of the page. On a long page a floating or repeated prompt keeps the path open throughout.

How are CTAs tested?+

A/B tests one variable at a time: copy, position or friction-removers. Measure the final conversion alongside clicks so you do not optimise the wrong clicks.
