CPL

cost per lead

CPL (cost per lead) tells you what it cost to acquire one potential customer who left their contact details. It is calculated by dividing marketing spend by the number of leads. If an 800 € campaign produced 40 quote requests, the CPL is 20 €.

Good to know

The cheapest lead is not the best lead. Lightening the form lowers CPL but worsens lead quality, so CPL must always be tracked alongside how many leads turn into deals. Only lead price multiplied by your close rate reveals the true cost of customer acquisition, the CAC.

Lead price is also an offer question: the same audience leaves contact details at a different price depending on whether you offer a guide, a calculator or a meeting in return. The more committing the ask, the more expensive but better the lead.

FORMULA

How CPL is calculated

CPL is marketing spend divided by the number of leads generated. Count the full campaign cost, including content production.

CPL = marketing spend ÷ leads

In B2B services a typical CPL runs from tens to hundreds of euros. The bigger the deal value, the higher a CPL you should accept.

EXAMPLE

Campaign cost€800 Leads40 CPL800 ÷ 40 = €20

One quote request cost 20 euros. If every fifth one closes, acquiring one deal cost 100 euros.

PITFALLS

Two ways to misread CPL

All leads are lumped into one number

A guide downloader and a meeting booker are worth different amounts. Report lead types separately, or the average steers you wrong.

Content costs go uncounted

If producing the lead magnet cost 2,000 €, it belongs in the campaign costs. Media spend alone gives too flattering a number.

The cheapest channel is scaled blindly

A channel that produces cheap leads at a hundred euros will not necessarily do it at a thousand. Scale in steps and watch quality at every step.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CPL?+

Calculate backwards: deal margin times close rate gives the ceiling you can pay for a lead. With a 1,000 € margin and a 20 % close rate you can pay up to 200 € per lead.

Why does CPL vary by channel?+

In search the customer is already looking for a solution, so leads are more expensive but better. In social, leads are cheaper, but some people only leave details to download a guide.

How do I bring CPL down?+

Improve targeting, test the offer, meaning the lead magnet, and lighten the form with care. The biggest lever is usually the offer, not the ad design.

Does content production count towards CPL?+

Yes, if the content was made for the campaign. The cost of evergreen content can be spread across several campaigns.
