CPC
cost per clickCPC (cost per click) tells you what one click on your ad cost. It is calculated by dividing ad spend by the number of clicks. In Finland a Google search click typically costs 0.5–4 €, more in competitive industries.
Good to know
A cheap click is not the goal, a cheap conversion is. CPC is driven by keyword competition, ad quality scores and the target audience. A high-CPC keyword can still be the most profitable in the campaign if the searcher’s buying intent is strong. Track CPC together with CTR and CPA.
Click price forms in an auction where your quality matters as much as competitors’ bids. Google rewards a relevant ad and a good landing page with a lower price, so CPC partly measures your own craft. In small Finnish niches the auction can be thin: a single aggressive competitor entering or leaving moves your CPC more than anything you do yourself.
FORMULA
How CPC is calculated
CPC is ad spend divided by clicks. Platforms price clicks in an auction, so the realised price moves daily.
CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks
Quality scores decide: a more relevant ad wins the auction at a lower click price.
EXAMPLE
One site visitor cost 1.50 €. If every fiftieth clicker buys, one sale costs 75 €.
PITFALLS
Two ways to misread CPC
The cheapest click wins the comparison
A cheap click without buying intent is the most expensive kind. Always compare cost per conversion, not per click.
Brand terms flatter the average
Searches for your own name are cheap and drag the campaign average down. Report brand and generic searches separately.
Automated bidding goes unsupervised
Smart bidding works, but reacts to data changes with a lag. Check realised CPC weekly even when bids are automated.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
How much does a click cost in Finland?+
In Google search typically 0.5–4 €, in competitive fields such as legal or finance 5–15 €. On Meta, clicks usually run 0.2–1.5 €.
How do I lower my CPC?+
Improve the match between search, ad and landing page, raise your CTR and cut search terms that carry no buying intent.
Which is better, a cheap or an expensive click?+
Wrong question: what matters is the cost per conversion. An expensive click with strong intent beats a cheap one without it.
Why does CPC change with the season?+
The auction has more bidders at Christmas and in sale seasons. The same click can cost twice as much in November as in February.
