CTR

click-through rate

CTR (click-through rate) tells you what share of the people who saw your ad or search result clicked it. It is calculated by dividing clicks by impressions. A thousand impressions and 15 clicks means a CTR of 1.5 %.

Good to know

CTR measures how compelling the message is, not sales. A high CTR with poor sales usually means the ad promises something the landing page does not deliver. In search ads a good CTR is typically 3–10 %, in social feeds 0.5–2 %. Always compare within the same channel and campaign type.

CTR is not only an advertising metric: track the click-through rate of your organic search results in Search Console too. Good content under the wrong title can lose half its potential visitors. In Finland, ads in Finnish reliably outperform English-language versions on CTR, even in audiences that speak English well.

FORMULA

How CTR is calculated

CTR is clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by one hundred. An impression is counted every time the ad loads into view.

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100

Ad platforms reward a high CTR with better quality scoring, which lowers your cost per click.

EXAMPLE

Impressions1,000 Clicks15 CTR15 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 1.5 %

One and a half percent of viewers clicked. For a social ad that is good, for a search ad it is weak.

PITFALLS

Two ways to misread CTR

Clickbait lifts CTR and sinks sales

An exaggerated promise collects clicks that bounce straight away. CTR rose, conversion rate collapsed, and more money burned.

Channel numbers get averaged together

A search ad’s 5 % and a feed ad’s 1 % are both good numbers. An average across them says nothing.

Novelty is read as the baseline

A new ad collects its highest CTR in the first days, then settles naturally. Judge the level only after a week of data.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CTR?+

It depends on the channel: 3–10 % in Google search ads, 0.5–2 % in Meta feed ads, 0.1–0.5 % in display. Your own history is the best benchmark.

Why does a high CTR not guarantee sales?+

A click signals interest, not intent to buy. An exaggerated promise collects clicks that bounce straight off the landing page.

How do I improve CTR?+

Test the hook, meaning the first second or the headline, sharpen the offer and narrow the audience to people the message is genuinely relevant to.

What is a good CTR in organic search?+

Position one typically collects 25–35 % of clicks, position three about 10 %. If you rank well but CTR is low, the title and meta description need work.
