Keyword

search term

A keyword is the word or phrase people use to search for information, services and products in search engines. It is search marketing’s base unit: content is built to answer keywords and ads are bought against them.

Good to know

A keyword is a window into the customer’s head: search terms state needs unfiltered and in their own words. That makes keyword research marketing’s cheapest customer insight, and the gap to your own jargon often surprises: you sell "digital customer experience", the customer searches "website for a company".

A keyword’s value is not in volume but in intent: "marketing agency pricing" brings buyers, "what is marketing" brings students. AI and voice search stretch keywords into questions and full sentences, which grows the long tail’s weight further.

IN PRACTICE

Keywords at work

In content

One main keyword and its close relatives per page: in the title, subheadings and naturally in the text. Stuffing backfires.

In advertising

Purchase-intent terms get the budget, negative keywords fence off the waste. The search term report reveals the real queries.

In tracking

Positions and clicks per term from Search Console: which terms deliver, where the headroom is, what leaks to competitors.

PITFALLS

Two keyword mistakes

Company language overrides customer language

Internal terminology is not search language. Terms are chosen from data, not the brand book.

One page chases ten keywords

Focus scatters and the page ranks for nothing. One topic and main keyword per page, close variants in support.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

How many keywords per page?+

One main keyword and a handful of synonyms. Different topics and intents get their own pages.

Where do I see which terms my site is found with?+

Google Search Console lists queries, impressions, clicks and positions for free. It is keyword tracking’s first tool.

What does keyword competition mean?+

How strong the sites holding the top spots are and what an ad click costs. Hard competition points you through the long tail first.

Are keywords dead in the AI search era?+

The form changes, the need does not: questions are long keywords. The content that answers them best gets picked for both results and summaries.

How does multilingualism affect keywords?+

Every language is its own market with its own search habits. Direct translation is not enough: research the terms in each target language separately.
