Keyword research
search demand analysisKeyword research is the study of what words potential customers use, and in what volumes, when they search for information and services around your topic. It turns content planning from guessing into data: you know what to pursue and in what order.
Good to know
Good research does not just list volumes, it groups queries into topics and by intent: which searches need a service page, which an article. The outcome is a prioritised content plan, not a spreadsheet.
Volume is not the only criterion. A hundred monthly searches with purchase intent beat ten thousand searches of curiosity. Small queries are worth covering when competition is low and the search leads to a sale.
IN PRACTICE
How keyword research proceeds
Collect the raw data
Your own Search Console queries, tool suggestions, competitors’ visibility and the customer questions your sales team hears, into one list.
Group and prioritise
Queries are grouped into topics and scored on three axes: volume, competition and commercial value. Valuable, winnable searches rise to the top.
Assign to pages
Each topic group gets a page: an existing one to improve or a new one to create. Two pages chasing the same query compete against each other.
PITFALLS
Two ways to waste the research
Volume decides alone
The biggest search volume brings the curious, not buyers. Without a commercial value estimate the plan fills with wrong priorities.
The research stays a spreadsheet
A thousand-row list without a per-page plan never becomes traffic. Research is done only when every topic has an owner page and a schedule.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Frequently asked questions
What tools does keyword research need?+
Google Keyword Planner and Search Console cover the start. Paid tools such as Ahrefs add competitor data and sharper volumes.
How often should the research be refreshed?+
A thorough round once a year and a light check quarterly. Search behaviour shifts, and AI search accelerates the shift.
Are small search volumes worth pursuing?+
Yes, when the intent is transactional: ten searches a month with the right intent can produce a sale a month. Long-tail queries are often the most profitable.
How does research become a content plan?+
Order the topic groups by value and competition, assign each a page type and a schedule. The plan lives: actuals tell you where to invest next.
What does research cost from an agency?+
A thorough keyword research with a content plan typically costs 1,000–3,000 € in Finland. It is the best-yielding first item of a content budget.
