Long-tail keyword

long tail search

A long-tail keyword is a specific, multi-word query with low search volume but high conversion intent. Where "marketing" is a head term, "marketing agency for restaurants helsinki" is long tail: fewer searchers, a clearer need.

Good to know

The power of the tail is in the mass: a single query gets searched a few dozen times a month, but thousands of tail queries together often exceed the biggest head volumes. Competition is also lighter, so a new site can win in the tail long before it competes on head terms.

AI and voice search stretch the tail further: people ask full questions instead of keywords. Content that answers a precise question precisely gets picked both for search results and as a source for AI answers.

IN PRACTICE

How to harness the long tail

Mine the questions

Search Console, Google’s "people also ask" boxes and the questions your sales team hears reveal what tail your customers already search.

Answer a topic per page

Gather closely related tail queries onto one page as subheadings. Ten separate thin pages lose to one comprehensive one.

Let the tail feed the service pages

Tail content brings the visitor, internal links guide them to a service page. Without a path forward, tail traffic stays reading.

PITFALLS

Two ways to waste the tail

Every query gets its own page

Ten thin pages on one topic compete with each other and lose to one comprehensive page. Grouping decides before writing does.

Tail traffic stays reading

An article without a path to a service page produces visitors but no sales. Every tail piece carries a clear next step.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognise a long-tail keyword?+

Typically three or more words, volume under a hundred a month and a precise need: a location, industry or situation included in the query.

Why do tail queries convert better?+

A precise search signals an advanced need. Someone searching "restaurant social media marketing price" already knows what they want; a "marketing" searcher does not yet.

Should every tail query get its own page?+

No. Group queries that mean the same onto one page. A separate page is made only when the intent or topic genuinely differs.

How do I find the tail without tools?+

Type a query into Google and study the autocomplete plus the related searches at the bottom. That is Google’s own data on real searches.

How do tail and head terms fit one strategy?+

A new site starts in the tail, where it can win now, and advances to head terms as authority grows. An established site works both in parallel.
